The size of your new steps directly determines the size of the footing required to ensure long-lasting stability. All of our steps are built on a solid concrete footing, with each additional step having its own footing as we build upwards. Once we reach the desired height, the steps are filled with 3/4 clean stone, and the landing is finished with a layer of concrete for the pavers to rest on, providing a durable foundation that guarantees your steps will stand the test of time.
Step one in building steps for a patio is setting the heights. We aim to set the landing no more than 5 inches below your door, as this height offers the most comfortable and safe transition from indoors to outdoors without the feeling of stepping too far down. Ensuring the proper height is crucial for both safety and aesthetics. Our masonry steps can be built with either 6-inch or 8-inch risers, depending on your preference. Ultimately, your new stoop will not only enhance the entryway of your home but also create a smooth and functional connection between your indoor and outdoor spaces.
Once the heights are determined, we can begin digging the footing. All of our stoops are built with concrete footings mixed on-site to ensure strength and durability. The depth of the footing varies depending on the height of the stoop, ranging from 12 inches deep for smaller stoops up to 36 inches deep for taller ones. This attention to proper footings guarantees long-lasting stability and prevents shifting over time.
Once the footing is in place, we begin by laying the first course of blocks, carefully considering both the design of the paver steps and the layout of the patio. This initial course is crucial because it sets the foundation for the entire structure, determining the overall look and alignment as we build upward. Each additional step gets its own footing to ensure maximum stability. Although the process might seem complex, it guarantees the durability and longevity of your new steps. As we continue building, the stoop is filled with 3/4 stone, with the top finished off with a sturdy concrete slab.
We begin by installing the coping, which is adhered to the block using masonry glue. Afterward, we finish the paver landing, locking it in place with polymeric sand. For optimal functionality, landings should extend at least 3 feet from your door, particularly if you have a hinged door instead of a sliding one.
Stoops can be constructed from a variety of materials, including block, cinder block with a stone veneer, or wood. Additionally, stoops offer an excellent opportunity to incorporate lighting. This not only adds aesthetic value but also ensures a safer environment when using the steps at night. It’s important to plan for lighting before starting the project, as installing lights afterward is usually not feasible.
