How Much Does a Paver Patio Cost?

What's beneath our patios?

At TruePatio, we install each patio with meticulous attention to manufacturer specifications. Our process begins with laying down a geotextile fabric over the compacted subbase. On top of this, we add a 4-6-inch layer of 3/4 clean stone. Following this, we establish a solid 4-6-inch base of crushed material, which we compact using a high-powered plate compactor. We then apply a fine layer of mason sand for leveling. The next step involves setting the pavers in place, securing the edges with concrete, and finally, we complete the installation by filling the joints with polymeric sand for a durable, long-lasting finish.

Determining Heights Based on Your Property's Grade

The first step in installing a patio is assessing the grade of your property. This is a critical phase in determining the height of your new paver project, as it sets the foundation for all subsequent steps. Proper evaluation of your property’s elevation is essential for a successful patio installation. Local patio installers understand the importance of this process. Once we establish the starting height, we add a “pitch” to the pavers – typically, 1.5 inches of slope every 10 feet, angled away from your home. This ensures effective water drainage while maintaining a level surface that doesn’t feel like a ramp. The result is a patio that is both functional and visually appealing, providing a space you’ll love to use and enjoy.

Excavation and Site Preparation for Your Paver Project

Once the elevation levels are established, our team begins the excavation process. We typically dig 7-8 inches below the stringline height, removing all the soil or debris from the area. After excavation, the site is cleared of all excess material. The crew then double-checks the levels before compacting the ground, ensuring a solid and stable base to prevent future settling.

Setting Up Forms & Installing Subbase

We use wooden forms to ensure our subbase remains at the desired level. Once the forms are in place and temporarily secured, we fill the area with Recycled Concrete Aggregate (RCA). RCA serves as the subbase for most residential walkways. For pools and driveways, poured concrete may be required. The RCA is installed in layers, typically 2-3 inches at a time, compacting each layer before adding the next. Once we reach the top of the forms, a layer of fine sand is spread over the compacted RCA, tamped down, and screeded to a smooth finish. The sand helps level the surface to account for minor variations in the pavers, ensuring an even installation.

Borders

The border provides an excellent opportunity to introduce a pop of color to your project. Options are limitless, whether you choose a border that matches your patio, an accent color, or even a double border for added emphasis. Once all the pavers are laid, the patio is in its final phase of completion, with the border serving as the finishing touch to enhance the overall design.

Final Stages of Paver Construction

In the final stages, we add a concrete edge to the exposed perimeter of the patio. This edge acts as a restraint, ensuring that the pavers stay firmly in place. The concrete is set about 1 inch below the top of the paver and is then covered with topsoil for a seamless finish.

To fill the joints between the pavers, we use polymeric sand. This involves sweeping the sand into the joints, and after proper installation and watering, the sand hardens, locking out weeds and keeping the pavers securely in place.

Paver Sealants

If you love the vibrant look of your patio when it’s wet, paver sealants can give it that same appearance permanently. However, it’s recommended to wait at least one year before applying a sealant. This waiting period allows efflorescence, a natural process where salts rise to the surface of the pavers, to occur. Sealing too early can trap these salts and affect the finish. Once efflorescence has passed, sealing will enhance both the color and durability of your pavers, preserving their beauty for years to come.

Setting Up to Lay Pavers

Once the sand is prepared, we set up our square lines. When laying pavers, the joints between each one form bond lines. To ensure the patio is properly aligned, it must be “square” with your home or any other stationary structure in the area. This step is critical for proper construction etiquette and ensures the most visually appealing result. Our team is trained to lay the pavers first and then install the borders afterward for a precise and polished finish.
