At True Patio Design & Build, we start our driveway installations with a 6-8-inch base of Quarry Process, compacted with a power roller. Once the masonry work is complete, we return to regrade the base and compact it again. Finally, we apply 2 inches of asphalt blacktop and roll it again to ensure a smooth surface. For those considering driveway design ideas, our process ensures a solid and durable foundation, resulting in a long-lasting and visually appealing driveway that meets your expectations.
The first step in installing a new paver driveway is removing your existing asphalt and subbase. Once the old material is carted away, we’ll compact the ground and install a new Recycled Concrete Aggregate (RCA) subbase. This base is essential for providing stability and is compacted using a power roller. For best results, we recommend parking on the subbase for 2-3 weeks to allow it to settle properly before laying the new asphalt. If you’re expanding your driveway into a lawn area, we will also remove all the soil to prepare the ground. New Jersey’s Professional Driveway Installers
Once the existing driveway has been removed and the new base installed, you have the option to enhance your driveway with masonry products. These can include borders, aprons, curbing, or various types of inlays. Features like paver borders, paver aprons, or Belgian block curbs are installed on a concrete subbase to ensure durability and a polished finish, giving your driveway both aesthetic appeal and structural integrity.
When it’s time to lay down the new asphalt, we will revisit the subbase process by adding Qp (Quarry Process) and compacting it in the necessary areas. The asphalt will then be placed and spread using either a paver box or by hand raking, depending on the size of the driveway. The asphalt is initially spread at 2 inches, which is then compacted to about 1.5 inches—just the right thickness for durability, though not noticeable to the eye.
Once your new asphalt driveway is completed, it’s important to wait 4 to 7 days before driving on it. During this time, heat from your tires could leave imprints on the fresh surface. If you’re considering sealcoating, we recommend waiting at least 2 years or until the aggregate starts to show and the asphalt begins to lose its deep black appearance. This ensures the best results and prolongs the life of your driveway.
