How Much Does a Pool Patio Cost?

What’s Under Our Pool Patios

Installing pool patios is quite similar to installing regular patios, with two key differences. The first is the subbase, which in pool patios is made of poured concrete for added strength and stability. The second difference is the pitch or slope of the pavers, which is carefully designed to ensure proper drainage away from the pool, preventing water from pooling on the surface.

Coping

Coping is the term used to identify the material used to cap the pool edge or shell wall. Besides simply being necessary, the coping provides an opportunity for a decorative accent, which can greatly enhance the appearance of the pool, steps or walls.

The Cambridge Shapes are specially designed for specific structural, landscape and pavement applications and hardscape solutions such as steps, pool coping, edging and curbs, facing and permeable pavements.

Options we recommend are:

Cambridge Crusader 12×24 Cap

6 x 12 Bullnose

Ledgestone Cap with Armortec

Pitch on a Pool Patio vs. a Standard Patio

Just like a standard patio, a pool patio must be sloped away from the home, but it also needs to be sloped away from the pool. Imagine experiencing a heavy rainstorm and having all the debris from your patio wash directly into your pool—that’s exactly what proper grading helps to avoid.

Subbase Preparation

The first step in building a pool patio is setting the proper heights. Preparing the base is the most critical aspect of pool patio construction. One reason for this is that we pour a concrete subbase, meaning we only get one chance to do it right. Another key factor is compaction. Compaction is crucial because the soil around a new pool has been disturbed, creating air pockets and voids that can cause the ground to settle over time. If you’ve ever noticed pavers around a pool sinking below the level of the coping at a friend’s or family member’s house, this is often due to poor compaction.

Pouring Concrete

Once compaction is complete and the forms are set, we proceed to pour the concrete. Pouring concrete is a meticulous process. We need to ensure that all the forms are set at the correct heights, the area is clear of any obstacles that could affect productivity, and tarps are placed to prevent concrete splatter. After pouring and screeding the concrete, we must wait for it to cure. Once it has cured enough to walk on without being deformed, we can continue working. Concrete cures into a solid structure, so if it’s not done correctly, removing it would be a major hassle. Concrete is always recommended around new pools, especially since the chance of ground settling is higher in these areas.

Coping, Sand & Pavers

Next, we install your chosen coping. Different types of coping and pools require different installation techniques. For example, bullnose coping can be glued to concrete, but for steel wall pools, we may need to install wire lath to the coping and then set the bullnose in concrete. Depending on the situation, you may notice a concrete joint. Although it might seem complicated at first, our experienced pool and patio contractors will guide you through every step, ensuring precision and quality.

Before installing the pavers, we add a fine sand bedding layer to create a base for the pavers. Once everything is squared and the pavers are laid, we can cut inlays and add any borders. A concrete edge is applied to the exposed perimeter, followed by a layer of polymeric sand. Keep in mind, during the process of creating a beautiful paver project, things can look messy before they look great. The construction process may leave dust and debris in the pool, but it’s nothing that your pool maintenance company can’t clean up. In the end, you’ll have a stunning pool patio that enhances your outdoor space. If you’re looking for pool patio ideas, we provide plenty of inspiration and professional guidance.
