We install our walkways according to manufacturer specifications. We start with a 4-6 inch crushed material base, compacted with a gas-powered plate compactor, followed by a ¼ inch layer of fine mason sand for leveling. The next step is paver installation, concreting the edges, and finally applying polymeric sand to the joints for a long-lasting finish.

The first step in installing a paver walkway is assessing the grade of your property. This step is crucial as it determines the height and foundation for your new paver construction project. Proper evaluation of the elevation is essential to ensure success in all subsequent stages. Once we establish the starting height, we incorporate a “pitch” into the pavers—typically, 1.5 inches of slope for every 10 feet, sloping away from your home. This guarantees effective water drainage and prevents the walkway from feeling like a ramp. While aesthetics are important, functionality is equally prioritized to deliver a walkway that is both beautiful and practical.
The first step in a paver walkway installation is evaluating the grade of your property. This is essential in determining the height for your new paver project, as it influences all subsequent steps. Understanding the elevation is crucial for proper water drainage. Once we establish the starting height, we add a “pitch” to the pavers, typically 1.5 inches every 10 feet sloped away from your home. This ensures proper water runoff without making the walkway feel like a ramp. While aesthetics are important, we equally prioritize functionality.
Once the height levels are established, our crew begins the excavation process. We dig down 7-8 inches from the height marked by our stringline. All excavated soil and debris are promptly removed from the site. After the area is cleared, we double-check the height measurements and begin compacting the ground to ensure stability and prevent future settling.
While part of the crew works on other tasks, another team sets up the wooden forms that maintain the desired level for the subbase. Once these forms are temporarily secured, we begin filling the area with RCA (Recycled Concrete Aggregate), which we use as a subbase for all residential projects. Paver walkway installation is typically required around new pools and driveways. The RCA is added in “lifts,” meaning we fill 2-3 inches at a time, compact it, and repeat until the top of the forms is reached, ensuring a solid foundation for the Paver Construction.
Once the subbase is satisfactory, we add a layer of fine sand over the compacted RCA. The sand is spread, tamped, and screeded to create a smooth surface. Since pavers are manufactured with a 1/16th-inch margin of error, the sand ensures the pavers sit level, providing both precision and aesthetic appeal.
Once the sand is prepared, we set up our square lines. When laying pavers, the joints between each paver form bond lines. To ensure the walkway aligns perfectly, it must be “square” with your home or any other designated structure in the area. This is a crucial part of proper construction etiquette and ensures the most visually appealing result. Our team is trained to lay the pavers first and install the borders afterward, guaranteeing precision and a clean finish.
The border offers an opportunity to enhance your project with a splash of color. The options are endless, from matching the border to your walkway, choosing an accent color, or even opting for a double border. Once all the pavers are installed, the walkway enters its final phase of completion, bringing everything together with a polished, finished look.
In the final stages, we add a concrete edge along the exposed perimeter of the walkway. This concrete edge serves as a restraint to prevent the pavers from shifting. It is set about 1 inch below the top of the pavers and is covered with topsoil for a seamless finish. To fill the joints between the pavers, we use polymeric sand.
This process involves sweeping the sand into the joints, and once water is added, it hardens to lock the pavers in place, preventing weed growth and ensuring the stability of the walkway.
